The Encounter 3X03
Location: USS Wolf
Timeline: MD 2 - 1000 hours
Wolk found himself starring at Commander Blanton, the Chief Diplomatic Officer that he had spent the last three years working for. He had heard the words coming out of the Chief’s mouth, but they weren’t really registering in the young Bajoran’s mind.
“I’m sorry sir, could you repeat that?” he asked.
Blanton laughed. “You seem a bit surprised Ensign. I thought you’d be excited about this opportunity. Most people can’t wait for a day like this, when they are offered their first senior staff position.”
“I guess I am surprised. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely want to continue to grow in the diplomatic field but I must admit I wasn’t expecting to move into that kind of position just yet. I have so much to learn yet, I’m not even sure that I’m ready” Wolk responded.
“Oh you are definitely ready, unless of course you are questioning my assessment and the training I’ve given you” Blanton said with a smile.
Wolk sat in silence for a few minutes, thinking back on his life, the experiences that had brought him to this point. Between his time working as a Prylar on Bajor, through his training at the Academy, and more so his time working under Blanton he had to admit that everything pointed to this day. So why did he suddenly feel ill prepared for this promotion?
“No Sir, I’m definitely not question you at all. I’m questioning myself” he said reluctantly.
“That’s natural. I’d be more concerned if you weren’t questioning. It’s a big step, no doubt about that. But it’s one that you are definitely ready for. Besides, you won’t be going alone. I’m always available to help you as you get settled in. Just because we won’t be working together doesn’t mean that I can’t continue to mentor you.” Blanton was trying his best to reassure the junior officer, but he wasn’t certain that he was getting through.
“I appreciate that Sir. I hope you know how much I admire and respect you” Wolk said. “If you think I’m ready, and obviously someone up the chain does as well, than I will endeavor to do my very best.”
The two diplomats continued talking for a few more minutes, but Wolk’s mind was already drifting. Chief Diplomatic Officer. The weight of that title wasn’t lost on him at all. Not to mention having to leave the Wolf, his friend, and his comfort zone. It was a daunting task for sure, but the longer he thought about it the more excited he became. By the Prophets he would not fail!
