Crisis on the Frontier 4X01
Location: Langley Station
Timeline: MD 2 1600 Hours
"So any ideas on where you'd like to go next?" Farragut asked. He and Lieutenant Patton were walking the dusty, neglected promenade of Langley Station. There were more people working on it than enjoying it so soon after the station was brought into orbit of the colony. It was an unconventional place to meet with an officer, but unconventional circumstances brought Lieutenant Patton and the Endeavour together. To Greg it seemed fitting.
Jack walked with his hands behind his back as his thoughts wandered briefly to what his men were up to. He had given them leave pending their new orders. It was Greg's question that snapped him from revelry into reality. "To be honest sir, no I haven't. I suspect the Corps will send us on another mission shortly. If not another mission our orders to return to base will come through. Are my men getting too rowdy on the ship? Once those orders come through we will be out of your hair sir." Jack smiled with his last statement.
"I haven't had any substantial complaints cross my desk if that's what you're asking," Greg asked with a sardonic smile. "How would you evaluate your time on the Endeavour?"
"Well sir if you don't mind me saying it seems that your ship is a little too big for it's britches. What I mean sir is with a crew the size that the Endeavour needs there are times when resources go unnoticed or get mishandled. It also seems that at times your Security Department can get strained. I apologize for the bluntness but it runs in my blood." Jack smiled and chuckled to himself. "There I go rambling when all you expected was the Endeavour is a fine vessel. Which she is indeed."
"Fair criticism," Greg said. He let out a sigh and shook his head. "Truth be told, I wasn't meant to be her commander, let a lone a task force commander, but here we are." He shrugged and stopped in his tracks. The Endeavour was his now. No longer temporary assignment or provisional control. She was his ship and the Endeavour needed fresh blood.
"Lieutenant. How would you feel about staying aboard?"
"Well I am sure my men would love to call a place home for a bit." Jack laughed. "As for me sir I am sure I would love it as well, but the question is would the corps and the fleet allow it to happen. After all there aren't many Marine units serving on ships these days." he added.
"An admiral or two owe me a favor," Farragut said, breaking into a smile. "If your people are willing to play nice, we can make it work. We're in a region of space known for pitching more than its fair-share of changeups. I want every type of player at my disposal and that includes you."
Jack smiled and could not resist a little chuckle. "Well sir I cannot promise that it will be all sunshine and rainbows but I will certainly do my best to keep my men in line. Besides it seems in the short time that we have been aboard they have taken a liking to some of the Endeavour's crew. I do have one question though sir. What of me? I mean commanding a Marine unit while aboard a ship is not a full time job." Jack glanced out the window as he sensed the change for the Kingsmen on the horizon.
"I have some ideas on that," Greg said. "I'm no longer just in command of the Endeavour. We've got half a dozen vessels entering the region, and the we're the flag ship. I need someone coordinating activity and collecting information. You up for more than just kicking in doors and charging hills?"
Jack smiled broadly and turned back to Greg "First congratulations sir! Secondly I think I can coordinate that for you. As for kicking in doors and charging hills I will always have time for that. Now I get to do a little more is all. I am sure we can find some things for my men to do to augment the crew as well. The Kingsmen are at your service."
"Glad to hear it, Lieutenant." Farragut let out a sigh of relief and cocked his head toward the airlock. "Now take some time to unwind and enjoy your shoreleave. Understood?"
"Aye sir and I will have our personal belongings transferred to the Endeavour. I sure hope you know what you are getting yourself into sir." Jack smirked at his new CO.
"Doubtful. That would be a first for my tenure as the Endeavour's commander," Greg said, shaking his head and laughing. "Welcome aboard, Lieutenant."
"Thank you sir" Jack replied with some laughter of his own. He knew two things in that moment. The first was that he would enjoy serving on the Endeavour, and looked forward to seeing where this chapter would take him. The second was that he needed to replicate a new uniform.
